When a tooth and its root fall out, the jawbone begins to shrink. A dental implant can deter this shrinkage and promote a full facial profile. In some cases, Dr. Dougherty may need to perform a bone graft or sinus augmentation to enable a patient to receive dental implants.

Bone grafting is a very safe and highly successful treatment option that will involve Dr. Dougherty building up the bone material of the jaw so that implants can be safely and successfully inserted. This new bone material is likely to either come from elsewhere in the patient’s mouth or from a donor/bank. This process usually requires several months of healing, as the graft will need time to integrate with the surrounding tissue.

Alternatively, a sinus augmentation (or a “sinus lift”) is typically required when teeth have been lost from along the back of the upper jaw. These teeth are often the most difficult to restore because the sinus cavity is likely to become larger after tooth loss, leaving little space for the placement of one or more implants. To correct this, the sinus membrane must be shifted upwards. During the procedure, Dr. Dougherty will add new bone material below the sinus; this procedure should not affect your speech or the health of your sinuses in any way. This will ensure that your newly placed dental implants have an ample amount of sturdy bone to support them and benefit your full, functional smile over the years.
