Dental Implants in Ocean City, MD Recreate Strong, Lifelike Teeth

Older couple smiling on beachDental implants, also called tooth implants, are the modern way to replace one or more missing teeth. By replacing the tooth root as well as the tooth, the dental implant provides a restoration that closely mimics nature’s design. Dr. Edward Dougherty is a qualified implant dentist who has studied implantology at the Misch Institute and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. He can care for you through all phases of implant placement and restoration.

Dental implants consist of two parts: the implant post or root and the implant restoration. Dr. Dougherty inserts the implant post in a brief oral surgery. You’ll receive one or more implants for each missing tooth or sometimes more if you need to anchor a partial or denture. The implant site will need some time to heal, and then Dr. Dougherty can attach the restoration, which is the portion of the tooth that shows when you smile.

Dental implants are often the best option for replacing a missing tooth. Because of the artificial tooth roots, dental implants look and feel like natural teeth. Practice good oral hygiene and visit us regularly for checkups and cleanings, and your dental implants can last a lifetime. Please contact our Ocean City, MD location today if you’re ready to schedule your first consultation or if you have any questions for our team. We welcome new patients from Bethany Beach and other surrounding areas as well.

After Dr. Dougherty has determined that you’re a good candidate for dental implants, the first step of the procedure is the surgical insertion of the implants themselves into the patient’s jawbone. This allows them to integrate with the natural tissue and create a sturdy foundation that preserves oral health while also supporting lifelike restorations. Our team is proud to offer all phases of implant treatment, including this all-too important surgery, right here in-house so that our patients are able to stay in one, convenient location instead of having to travel to a separate specialist.

Once your mouth is fully healed and ready for its new “teeth,” it will be time to return to Delmarva Sedation Dentistry for the design and creation of your new, custom-made restorations.

Multiple options are available for implant restoration, and our recommendation for each unique patient will depend on their personal preferences and the extent of their tooth loss. Potential choices include:

  • Dental Crowns – All-ceramic dental crowns are the ideal restoration for individual dental implants, allowing Dr. Dougherty to replenish the attractive, functional structure without requiring any significant alteration of the surrounding natural teeth.
  • Fixed Dentures/Bridges – When several implants require coverage, replacing each one individually with a dental crown can become time-consuming and costly. As an alternative, some patients may prefer the placement of a dental bridge and/or denture that is anchored in place over the implants. These prosthetics are similar to their traditional counterparts with one major difference – they are designed to be fixed (permanent) in nature, just like the teeth that were lost.
  • Removable Implant-Retained Prosthetics – In certain circumstances, patients may benefit from an “overdenture” that attaches to implants while remaining removable in nature for cleaning and separate storage.
