There are many people that suffer from dental anxiety or phobia. A lot more than you may realize. Most people are so frightened by visiting a dental office that they will choose not to receive necessary treatment. This means that people are refusing treatment for a cavity, infection or other disease that is causing problems. This is not a good idea at all. Leaving diseases or other infections in your mouth without doing anything about it will allow said diseases or infections to spread. Our Ocean City, MD office wants you to have a wonderful smile, as well as excellent oral health. Did you know that avoiding dental care can lead to more than just a toothache? If you suffer from dental fear or anxiety, you could be at risk of developing the serious medical conditions linked to inflammation and infections of the teeth and gums. Recent studies have discovered a strong correlation between gum disease and cancer, heart disease, stroke, and other life threatening illnesses. Choosing to not visit the dentist regularly can literally take years off of your life. Don’t take chances with your good health, make an appointment with Dr. Dougherty at Delmarva Sedation Dentistry today. Dr. Dougherty’s sedation techniques can help you get past the dental anxiety that is jeopardizing your overall health. Dr. Dougherty protects the health of patients throughout Delmarva Peninsula, including West Ocean City, Bethany Beach, Selbyville, Rehoboth, Fenwick, Ocean Pines, Salisbury, Berlin and surrounding communities.
Dental Anxiety Can Lead to Serious Health Risks
- Cancer: Researchers have discovered that men with advanced gum disease are 49% more likely to develop kidney cancer, 54% more likely to develop pancreatic cancer, and 30% more likely to develop blood cancer.
- Heart Disease and Stroke: Studies have shown that 91% of heart disease patients have periodontitis. The two conditions have several risk factors in common including smoking, unhealthy diet, and excess weight. Many suspect that periodontitis has a direct role in raising the risk for heart disease as well. The theory they advance is that inflammation in the mouth can cause inflammation in the blood vessels of the heart, which allow less blood to travel between the heart and the rest of the body. This can raise blood pressure and help fatty plaque to break off the wall of a blood vessel and travel to the heart or the brain, contributing to heart attack and stroke.
- Pneumonia: Studies have also shown that bacteria growing in the mouth can be aspirated into the lungs to cause respiratory diseases such as pneumonia.
- Diabetes: There is an incredibly strong connection between diabetes and periodontitis. People with diabetes have trouble processing sugar because of a lack of insulin, the hormone that converts sugar into energy. Studies have found that inflammation that begins in the mouth is able to weaken your body’s ability to control blood sugar levels. Furthermore, high blood sugar provides ideal conditions for gum infections to take root. Fortunately, learning to manage gum disease can help bring your diabetes under control.
- Pregnancy Complications: Though many factors can contribute to premature or low birth weight deliveries, studies have found a possible link to gum disease. However, infection and inflammation anywhere in the body can interfere with a fetus’ development in the womb.

Does the thought of going to the dentist make you nervous? Is your fear of the dentist causing you to delay or avoid appointments altogether? With sedation dentistry from Dr. Dougherty, there’s no need to be afraid any longer!
Here at Delmarva Sedation Dentistry , we offer soothing sedation options to help you relax and have an anxiety-free dental appointment. We offer three methods: nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation and IV sedation. Dr. Dougherty has been practicing sedation dentistry for over 15 years and would love to help you decide what method is best for your unique needs.
Nitrous oxide is commonly referred to as laughing gas. The gas will be administered via a facemask, and will give you a sense of euphoria. You’ll feel relaxed and calm, ready for your appointment.
For oral conscious sedation, you’ll take an oral sedative the day of the appointment. You’ll feel very tired but will still be responsive to questions. Plus, your sense of time will be affected and you won’t remember much of the procedure.
IV sedation is also called sleep dentistry. You can literally be put to sleep while Dr. Dougherty gives you a brand new smile. This is a great option if you need several procedures done in a short time frame.
Many of our patients find sedation dentistry to be very helpful, especially if they experience dental anxiety or gag easily. If you’re nervous about your next dental appointment, give us a call! We’d love to use sedation dentistry to help you feel relaxed and comfortable.

Your Experienced Oral Surgeon in Ocean City
Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to come in—and you can expect them to arrive in the late teen years or early twenties. In some cases, these teeth are healthy and well-formed, but in a majority of people, wisdom teeth pose problems. Misaligned wisdom teeth can crowd or cause damage to existing teeth, and impacted ones can cause serious infection. So if your wisdom teeth can’t or won’t grow in properly, it’s important to have an oral surgeon like Dr. Dougherty remove them.
How Do I Know if my Wisdom Teeth Need to be Extracted?
As your comprehensive dentist, Dr. Dougherty oversees all aspects of your dental care, including checkups, cleanings, and oral surgery. Ask him at your next appointment about the position of your wisdom teeth, and whether you should plan on having them removed. Dr. Dougherty uses X-rays to periodically evaluate the alignment and movement of your wisdom teeth, and can give you the best advice about whether to take action or let them progress naturally.
What Should I Expect During Wisdom Teeth Removal?
First, your mouth will be numbed with a local anesthetic, the same type of medication we administer before filling a cavity. Dr. Dougherty can also provide sedation in addition to that anesthetic to ease any anxiety. As a highly trained sedation dentist, he is certified to administer all types of this medication, including nitrous oxide, oral sedatives, and even IV sedation.
