Overcome Anxiety with Sedation Dentistry

178181334Have you let dental fears keep you from getting the dental care you need? If you’re suffering from tooth pain and sensitivity because you’re too afraid to see the dentist, Sedation Dentistry can help. Sedation Dentistry practices provide anxiety relieving solutions to patients who are apprehensive about dental work. The truth is, everyone needs to see the dentist to keep their teeth healthy and their smile bright. Don’t put off the dental check up you need any longer. Make an appointment with Dr. Dougherty at Delmarva Sedation Dentistry today. Dr. Dougherty can provide comprehensive dental care using the latest IV, oral conscious, and inhalation sedation techniques. Dr. Dougherty proudly serves patients throughout the entire Delmarva Peninsula, including Bethany Beach, Selbyville, Rehoboth, Fenwick, Ocean Pines, Salisbury, and Berlin from his West Ocean City dental office.

What Are Your Sedation Dentistry Options?

  • Oral Conscious Sedation: The dentist can prescribe an anti- anxiety medication to be taken the night before or an hour before your appointment begins. Though you will be awake and responsive, you will be completely relaxed and free of apprehension or fear of the procedure.
  • IV Sedation: Delmarva Sedation Dentistry can also offer intravenous sedation as well. IV sedation is much like oral conscious sedation except that the medication is administered intravenously. This allows the sedative to take effect much faster and also gives the dentist more control over the level of sedation. You will be completely relaxed and may even be able to drift off to sleep during the procedure.
  • Nitrous Oxide Sedation: If you prefer a method that will not cause post procedure drowsiness, then nitrous oxide sedation may be your preferred sedation method. With this option, you will gently inhale nitrous oxide through a small mask covering your nose during the procedure. The gas will produce a sedated feeling of euphoria throughout your treatment. However, the effects of the gas will subside completely a few minutes after removing the mask.

Give Your Gums The Start Treatment at Delmarva Sedation Dentistry

Believe it or not, your gums are just as important, if not more, as your teeth when it comes to good oral health. Healthy gums give your teeth healthy groundwork to develop and flourish, and if that foundation is compromised, it can greatly affect the health of your teeth. At Delmarva Sedation Dentistry, Dr. Daugherty, Jr. along with our very knowledgeable team want to make sure your mouth is healthy from tip to toe, which is why we offer periodontal therapy to our patients.

Because over 80% of the population is living with some form of periodontal (gum) disease, odds are likely you do too and may not be aware of it. Though it may not seem like a big deal now, if left untreated, periodontal disease can greatly transmit a disease to other parts of your body. Bad cases of periodontal disease can lead to heart disease, stroke, respiratory complications, bone loss, tooth loss, pregnancy complications, and much more. It was recently discovered that serious periodontal disease can even lead to dementia. Many factors play a part in periodontal health, like tobacco use, certain medications, diabetes, poor nutrition, stress, and etcetera.

The good thing about gum disease is that it is reversible if caught early on. We perform periodontal therapy by doing routine scaling, laser treatment, root planing, and other methods to eliminate the bacteria and plaque. You yourself can help prevent periodontal disease by brushing and flossing at least twice a day, preferably after each meal. It would also be wise to invest in a mouthwash that is antibacterial and contains fluoride. Though brushing definitely tackles bacteria, mouthwash will be able to cover your entire mouth and do away with a lot more bacteria than brushing alone. With these simple tips and Dr. Dougherty, Jr.’s expertise, there’s no doubt you will embark on a long road of beautiful smiles and health!

If you’re interested in learning more about oral sedation or scheduling an appointment, give us a call at our West Ocean City dental office. Delmarva Sedation Dentistry serves patients from the entire Delmarva Peninsula, including Bethany Beach, Selbyville, Rehoboth, Fenwick, Ocean Pines, Salisbury, and Berlin.

Fixing Missing Teeth With Dental Implants

dental implant01If you’re missing one or a few teeth, the best option to restore your mouth is dental implants. At Delmarva Sedation Dentistry, we’re here to help.

Dr. Dougherty is a highly skilled dentist that has studied implantology and is well-equipped to help you through your implant surgery. It is important to replace missing teeth because once the original tooth and root are gone, your jawbone begins to shrink. A dental implant can help stop the shrinkage.

The dental implant is composed of two parts: the implant post or root and the actual implant itself. The post will be attached to your jaw by Dr. Dougherty and allowed to heal. Once it’s healed, then the implants can be attached and your smile will be repaired. Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth, in part because they’re attached to your jawbone just like your natural teeth.

If you’re missing teeth, dental implants could be the treatment you’ve been waiting for. We’d love to help you learn just how easy it can be. The team here at Delmarva Sedation Dentistry wants to see you smiling proudly again!

Call us today to schedule your appointment or to learn more about our dental implant procedures. Delmarva Sedation Dentistry serves patients from Bethany Beach, Fenwick, Ocean Pines, Salisbury and Berlin.

Transform Your Smile and Your quality of Life with Dental Implants

Dr. Dougherty Ocean City dental implantsA missing tooth can be an obstacle in more ways than one. Not only can it affect your self-confidence, it  can also have a serious impact on your overall health. But Dr. Edward Dougherty has a solution that can help you. As a restorative dentist for the Ocean City area, Dr. Dougherty offers dental implants to help patients reclaim their smiles, their confidence, and their health.

A Solution You Can Count On

Of all the restorative options available, the one that most closely mimics a natural tooth is dental implants. That’s because dental implants are made up of not only a crown but an implant, which is placed into the jaw to act as a prosthetic tooth root. After the implant has had time to fuse with the jaw, your new tooth will be affixed, creating a restoration that blends in seamlessly with the rest of your smile.

But what if you’re missing more than one tooth?

That’s not a problem. Dr. Dougherty can use dental implants to address a wide variety of restorative needs. Maybe you need a bridge, a partial, or a full denture. No matter which of these you might need, if you’re a candidate for dental implants, we can help you reclaim your smile.

How can you know if you’re a candidate?

By coming to our Ocean City dental office for a consultation appointment. During this consultation appointment, we can begin gathering all the information we’ll need to determine if dental implants really are the right treatment for you.

Call us today to schedule your appointment. We serve patients from all across the Delmarva Peninsula, including Bethany Beach, Selbyville, Rehobeth, Fenwick, Ocean Pines, Salisbury, and Berlin.

Comfortable Root Canals in Ocean City

root canal modelYou’ve probably heard the expression, “I’d rather have a root canal!” Many people equate root canals with discomfort, but the opposite is true: modern root canal therapy eliminates pain and restores good health to an internally damaged tooth. For two decades, Ocean City oral surgeon and sedation dentist Dr. Edward Dougherty has saved teeth from extraction and preserved smiles with root canals. He uses advanced techniques and calming sedation methods, including IV sedation, to deliver an experience that’s pleasant and positive. You’ll look at root canals in a whole new light!

Inside Your Tooth…
Every tooth contains a mass of nerves and vessels called the pulp. Canals lead from the pulp to the tooth root. These canals transport blood and nutrients to the root and carry away toxins. When the hard outer layers of a tooth are compromised by a fracture, deep cavity, or other trauma, harmful bacteria can penetrate the pulp and cause infection. Left untreated, this infection may lead to tooth loss.

Root Canals Preserve Teeth
A root canal is an oral surgery procedure that eliminates the need for tooth extraction and replacement with a prosthetic. During a root canal, Dr. Dougherty removes infected matter from a tooth and inserts a biocompatible filler in the newly cleaned canals. A custom-made crown placed atop the tooth renews dental form and function.

If your tooth requires a root canal, oral sedation or IV sedation will eliminate any nervous feelings you may experience prior to your oral surgery. You’ll rest comfortably while Dr. Dougherty performs your procedure and emerge from sedation with no memory of treatment details.

Dr. Dougherty: Ocean City’s Choice for Oral Surgery & Sedation
D. Dougherty’s impressive credentials make him uniquely qualified to perform even the most complex root canals in our Ocean City office. The doctor has undergone advanced training in oral surgery to deliver full-service restorative dental care. He’s hospital trained in IV sedation, and certified in oral sedation and IV sedation.
