Dental Anxiety Can Ruin Your Good Health

78325800Did you know that avoiding dental care can lead to more than just a toothache? If you suffer from dental fear or anxiety, you could be at risk of developing the serious medical conditions linked to inflammation and infections of the teeth and gums. Recent studies have discovered a strong correlation between gum disease and cancer, heart disease, stroke, and other life threatening illnesses. Choosing to not visit the dentist regularly can literally take years off of your life. Don’t take chances with your good health, make an appointment with Dr. Dougherty at Delmarva Sedation Dentistry today. Dr. Dougherty’s sedation techniques can help you get past the dental anxiety that is jeopardizing your overall health. Dr. Dougherty protects the health of patients throughout Delmarva Peninsula, including West Ocean City, Bethany Beach, Selbyville, Rehoboth, Fenwick, Ocean Pines, Salisbury, Berlin and surrounding communities.

Dental Anxiety Can Lead to Serious Health Risks

  • Cancer: Researchers have discovered that men with advanced gum disease are 49% more likely to develop kidney cancer, 54% more likely to develop pancreatic cancer, and 30% more likely to develop blood cancer.
  • Heart Disease and Stroke: Studies have shown that 91% of heart disease patients have periodontitis. The two conditions have several risk factors in common including smoking, unhealthy diet, and excess weight. Many suspect that periodontitis has a direct role in raising the risk for heart disease as well. The theory they advance is that inflammation in the mouth can cause inflammation in the blood vessels of the heart, which allow less blood to travel between the heart and the rest of the body. This can raise blood pressure and help fatty plaque to break off the wall of a blood vessel and travel to the heart or the brain, contributing to heart attack and stroke.
  • Pneumonia: Studies have also shown that bacteria growing in the mouth can be aspirated into the lungs to cause respiratory diseases such as pneumonia.
  • Diabetes: There is an incredibly strong connection between diabetes and periodontitis. People with diabetes have trouble processing sugar because of a lack of insulin, the hormone that converts sugar into energy. Studies have found that inflammation that begins in the mouth is able to weaken your body’s ability to control blood sugar levels. Furthermore, high blood sugar provides ideal conditions for gum infections to take root. Fortunately, learning to manage gum disease can help bring your diabetes under control.
  • Pregnancy Complications: Though many factors can contribute to premature or low birth weight deliveries, studies have found a possible link to gum disease. However, infection and inflammation anywhere in the body can interfere with a fetus’ development in the womb.

What Are Your Sedation Dentistry Options?

  • Oral Conscious Sedation: The dentist can prescribe an anti- anxiety medication to be taken the night before or an hour before your appointment begins. Though you will be awake and responsive, you will be completely relaxed and free of apprehension or fear of the procedure.
  • IV Sedation: Delmarva Sedation Dentistry can also offer intravenous sedation as well. IV sedation is much like oral conscious sedation except that the medication is administered intravenously. This allows the sedative to take effect much faster and also gives the dentist more control over the level of sedation. You will be completely relaxed and may even be able to drift off to sleep during the procedure.
  • Nitrous Oxide Sedation: If you prefer a method that will not cause post procedure drowsiness, then nitrous oxide sedation may be your preferred sedation method. With this option, you will gently inhale nitrous oxide through a small mask covering your nose during the procedure. The gas will produce a sedated feeling of euphoria throughout your treatment. However, the effects of the gas will subside completely a few minutes after removing the mask.

The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

She seems happy...For those who fear going to the dentist, getting any sort of dental work done can be quite a battle. Fear of the dentist is one of the most common fears people live with, which is why Dr. Edward Dougherty is able to calm his patients’ woes by offering sedation dentistry. There are many benefits to sedation dentistry, and we want to make sure you are aware of a few of them in case you decide it would be right for you.

One of the main benefits of sedation dentistry is the fact that it helps people overcome their fear of the dentist. For some, the fear is so strong that they will refuse to even get a simple routine cleaning done. Having a mild sedative can really help people get their much needed dental work done, letting them have better oral health. Another benefit is that your body is able to heal quicker and more proficiently. When your body is under high stress and anxiety, your body is not able to do even the most instinctual of functions as healing itself. When you are relaxed, your body is able to do what it needs to do in order for you to healing.

Sedation dentistry is also beneficial to those who want to save money. When you are sedated and calm, the dentist is able work longer and gets more work done. When you go in for multiple appointments, it can greatly increase the amount of money that you spend, as well as make your healing time a lot longer.

If you’re interested in learning more about sedation dentistry or scheduling an appointment, give us a call at our West Ocean City dental office. Root Canals from Dr. Dougherty

root canalIf your tooth is damaged and infected, you may need a root canal from Delmarva Sedation Dentistry to restore it back to health.

Your tooth is covered in a hard outer layer of enamel, protecting the sensitive pulp inside. When this inner part of your tooth becomes infected, you will need a root canal. Since it is tender and there are lots of nerves involved, the infection can be painful and should be treated as soon as possible.

If left untreated, the infection could spread and lead to the loss of your tooth. To treat it, Dr. Dougherty will perform a root canal. He’ll drill into your tooth, clean out the infection, and seal your tooth using a crown to prevent further infections or damage.

Many of our patients think that a root canal is a painful procedure. This is not the case, as usually the most painful part of the whole process is before the procedure. The pain in your tooth is what alerts you to the fact that you need a root canal.

Also, Dr. Dougherty has over 20 years experience at performing root canals. Between this and his sedation dentistry expertise, he will do his best to make your root canal treatment as comfortable as possible.

If you’re interested in learning more about root canals, give us a call at our West Ocean City dental office. Delmarva Sedation Dentistry serves patients from the entire Delmarva Peninsula, including Bethany Beach, Selbyville, Rehoboth, Fenwick, Ocean Pines, Salisbury, and Berlin.
