Get to the Root of the Problem with a Root Canal from Delmarva Sedation Dentistry

480377293When most people read the words root canal they think, “ouch.” In fact, however, a root canal is meant to eliminate the ouch of an infected tooth, which is usually the cause of toothache pain. Dr. Edward T. Dougherty, Jr. and his team at Delmarva Sedation Dentistry in Ocean City, MD, gently perform root canals with the aid of sedation dentistry so you are completely comfortable during the procedure.

Your tooth is essentially comprised of three layers: the hard protective layer called enamel; a sensitive middle layer known as dentin; and the inner layer that is referred to as dental pulp. The pulp houses nerve and lymph tissues, as well as blood vessels. If this pulp becomes infected—because of extensive tooth decay, a penetrating crack or hard blow to the face—then the tooth begins to die and a root canal becomes necessary to preserve the tooth and avoid extraction. Symptoms of an infected tooth include:

  • Moderate to serve pain
  • Swelling around the infected tooth
  • A tooth that is newly discolored
  • Signs of infection on an x-ray

The Root Canal Procedure

The first step in a root canal at Delmarva Sedation Dentistry is making sure you’re comfortable. If necessary, we offer nitrous oxide, oral sedation or IV sedation to help you relax. Then, Dr. Dougherty anesthetizes the site and accesses the pulp chamber and associated root canals. The canals are carefully cleaned, removing all signs of infection and any accompanying debris. The root and canals are filled with a biocompatible material and then sealed. More often than not, Dr. Dougherty tops the tooth with a crown for protection, strength and long-lasting durability.

Dental Anxiety Can Ruin Your Good Health

78325800Did you know that avoiding dental care can lead to more than just a toothache? If you suffer from dental fear or anxiety, you could be at risk of developing the serious medical conditions linked to inflammation and infections of the teeth and gums. Recent studies have discovered a strong correlation between gum disease and cancer, heart disease, stroke, and other life threatening illnesses. Choosing to not visit the dentist regularly can literally take years off of your life. Don’t take chances with your good health, make an appointment with Dr. Dougherty at Delmarva Sedation Dentistry today. Dr. Dougherty’s sedation techniques can help you get past the dental anxiety that is jeopardizing your overall health. Dr. Dougherty protects the health of patients throughout Delmarva Peninsula, including West Ocean City, Bethany Beach, Selbyville, Rehoboth, Fenwick, Ocean Pines, Salisbury, Berlin and surrounding communities.

Dental Anxiety Can Lead to Serious Health Risks

  • Cancer: Researchers have discovered that men with advanced gum disease are 49% more likely to develop kidney cancer, 54% more likely to develop pancreatic cancer, and 30% more likely to develop blood cancer.
  • Heart Disease and Stroke: Studies have shown that 91% of heart disease patients have periodontitis. The two conditions have several risk factors in common including smoking, unhealthy diet, and excess weight. Many suspect that periodontitis has a direct role in raising the risk for heart disease as well. The theory they advance is that inflammation in the mouth can cause inflammation in the blood vessels of the heart, which allow less blood to travel between the heart and the rest of the body. This can raise blood pressure and help fatty plaque to break off the wall of a blood vessel and travel to the heart or the brain, contributing to heart attack and stroke.
  • Pneumonia: Studies have also shown that bacteria growing in the mouth can be aspirated into the lungs to cause respiratory diseases such as pneumonia.
  • Diabetes: There is an incredibly strong connection between diabetes and periodontitis. People with diabetes have trouble processing sugar because of a lack of insulin, the hormone that converts sugar into energy. Studies have found that inflammation that begins in the mouth is able to weaken your body’s ability to control blood sugar levels. Furthermore, high blood sugar provides ideal conditions for gum infections to take root. Fortunately, learning to manage gum disease can help bring your diabetes under control.
  • Pregnancy Complications: Though many factors can contribute to premature or low birth weight deliveries, studies have found a possible link to gum disease. However, infection and inflammation anywhere in the body can interfere with a fetus’ development in the womb.

If you’re suffering from tooth pain and sensitivity because you’re too afraid to see the dentist, Sedation Dentistry can help. Sedation Dentistry practices provide anxiety relieving solutions to patients who are apprehensive about dental work. The truth is, everyone needs to see the dentist to keep their teeth healthy and their smile bright. Don’t put off the dental check up you need any longer. Dr. Dougherty proudly serves patients throughout the entire Delmarva Peninsula, including Bethany Beach, Selbyville, Rehoboth, Fenwick, Ocean Pines, Salisbury, and Berlin from his West Ocean City dental office.

What Are Your Sedation Dentistry Options?

  • Oral Conscious Sedation: The dentist can prescribe an anti- anxiety medication to be taken the night before or an hour before your appointment begins. Though you will be awake and responsive, you will be completely relaxed and free of apprehension or fear of the procedure.
  • IV Sedation: Delmarva Sedation Dentistry can also offer intravenous sedation as well. IV sedation is much like oral conscious sedation except that the medication is administered intravenously. This allows the sedative to take effect much faster and also gives the dentist more control over the level of sedation. You will be completely relaxed and may even be able to drift off to sleep during the procedure.
  • Nitrous Oxide Sedation: If you prefer a method that will not cause post procedure drowsiness, then nitrous oxide sedation may be your preferred sedation method. With this option, you will gently inhale nitrous oxide through a small mask covering your nose during the procedure. The gas will produce a sedated feeling of euphoria throughout your treatment. However, the effects of the gas will subside completely a few minutes after removing the mask.

Tips To Have Fresh Breath

493881585One thing that can instantly give someone a bad impression is having bad breath. Bad breath, also known as halitosis, can deter people from being around you, and can negatively affect the way you feel about yourself. As much as you want to make a lasting impression, halitosis will not allow you to make a positive one. If you have tried conventional methods, such as mints and gums, to tackle your halitosis and nothing seems to be working, you may need to increase your efforts in order to ensure fresher breath. Thankfully, Dr. Edward T. Dougherty is able to give some advice to his patients living with halitosis, all in the hopes they will be able to experience fresher, more welcoming breath.

Though it may seem simple enough, one of the most effective ways you can tackle your halitosis is by practicing good oral care routines. By brushing and flossing your teeth every day, you are able to eliminate millions of bacteria that reside in your smile, causing your bad breath. Your mouth houses millions of bacteria, and when they are able to sit and fester in your smile, they will multiply and take over your mouth.  By brushing and flossing your teeth every day, you are able to get rid of the bacterium and debris that cause your breath to be less than appealing.

One other thing you can do that can greatly increase your odds of having fresher breath is by visiting Dr. Dougherty every six months for your dental checkups. When there is decay in your mouth, such as gum disease and cavities, all of that is caused by bacteria. When Dr. Dougherty is able to take care of the decay in your mouth, you are able to experience fresher breath, improving your way of life. If you are not sure whether or not you are living with halitosis, some examples are a constant bad taste in your mouth that will not go away, and a mouth that is always dry. By keeping these tips in mind, you are sure to begin living a life of fresher breath and better wellbeing.

If you’re interested in learning more about halitosis or scheduling an appointment, give us a call at our West Ocean City dental office. Delmarva Sedation Dentistry serves patients from the entire Delmarva Peninsula, including Bethany Beach, Selbyville, Rehoboth, Fenwick, Ocean Pines, Salisbury, and Berlin.

Be Well Prepared when Faced with a Dental Emergency

450745755Everyone has fallen victim to life’s unexpected twists and turns. No matter how much we try to plan something or look forward to a certain thing taking place, life often times has a way of reminding us that it is in charge. Because many things in life cannot be planned for, emergencies and accidents happen every day. Unfortunately, one of the most common types of emergencies are dental related. Though you may think there is nothing you can do, Dr. Edward T. Dougherty is able to put your mind at rest by offering advice when faced with a dental emergency.

If you happened to lose a tooth, it is important to keep the tooth moist. Dr. Dougherty may be able to reattach the tooth to the gum tissue, but if that does not work, keep the tooth submerged in milk in the meantime. Contacting Dr. Dougherty as soon possible after the tooth is lost gives you a greater chance of being able to have it reattached. If you have cracked your tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water. After that, use a cold compress to diminish the swelling.

If your crown goes missing, put it in a safe place, and bring it with you when you come to see us so we can reattach it. If the tooth that the crown was covering is sensitive, place some clove oil on it with a cotton swab. If you are really in a bind until you set up an appointment to see us, sometimes a crown can be temporarily reattached using toothpaste or denture cream. If you have a toothache, visiting Dr. Dougherty is important, as there can be many underlying issues that could be causing your tooth to ache. While you are waiting to see Dr. Dougherty, you can treat the pain with some over the counter oral pain relief gel, and rinse your mouth out with warm water and floss.

The next time you find yourself in a dental emergency, these few, helpful tips will be able to lessen the stress and have you better prepared!
