Partial Dentures & Implant-Supported Dentures at Delmarva Sedation Dentistry

general dentistryWelcome to the wonderful world of partial dentures and implant-supported dentures. You’ve probably seen a late-night infomercial advertising them. But do you really know what they are and the purpose they serve? Welcome to dentures 101 with Dr. Edward Dougherty, Jr. in Ocean City, MD – class is about to begin.

It goes without saying that teeth are an important part of your speech, diet, appearance and, most importantly, health. Dentures, especially partial dentures and implant-supported dentures, offer a viable solution if you’re missing some or all of your pearly whites. What’s the difference between the two?

Partial dentures are a great option if you have some healthy teeth remaining. Secured with hidden clasps, partial dentures fit with surrounding dentition like a puzzle piece. For added convenience, a partial denture can be removed for regular cleaning and maintenance.

Implant-supported dentures serve two functions: to provide unrivaled support and functionality. Common annoyances like slipping, clicking, clasps, or adhesives are a thing of the past. Comfort is the name of the game, but it doesn’t stop there. Implant-supported dentures also help prevent the bone loss that accompanies missing teeth.

Restorative Dentistry Options

Just because you take good care of your teeth doesn’t mean you won’t need restorative dental work down the road. Delmarva Sedation Dentistry offers several options combined with the gentle and compassionate care you’re looking for.

  • Bridges – permanent bridges can restore your smile to new after losing teeth to injury, accident, or gum disease.
  • Crowns – Also known as caps, Delmarva Sedation Dentistry can design, fit, and place all-porcelain, precious metal, or porcelain-pressed crowns in a couple of short appointments.
  • Dental Implants – Also known as tooth implants, it’s the modern way to replace one or more missing teeth and consists of two parts: the implant post/root and implant restoration.
  • Root Canals – Necessary to remove an internally damaged tooth once an infection occurs. If infection occurs, the dead tooth is extracted and replaced with a prosthetic.

Smile Makeovers in Ocean City, MD

159289454If you think there are simply too many flaws in your smile to make taking the first step worthwhile, then think again. With a smile makeover, Dr. Edward T. Dougherty at Delmarva Sedation Dentistry in Ocean City, MD, will create a step-by-step treatment plan to take your smile from less than appealing to perfection!

First, you’ll meet with Dr. Dougherty. He’ll examine your oral health and together you’ll discuss your idea of a perfect smile. Combining your smile goals with the dynamics of your face, mouth, and skin tone, the dentist will suggest the procedures that he thinks are necessary to build the smile of your dreams.

Tooth Restorations. If any of your teeth are in need of repair, that will likely be the first step. Healthy teeth are the foundation of a beautiful smile. With this in mind, Dr. Dougherty may need to repair cavities with tooth-colored fillings, replace missing teeth with dental implants, dentures or crown and bridge work, or rebuild broken teeth with a crown.

Cosmetic bonding and porcelain veneers. For teeth that have chips, minor cracks or have not responded to teeth whitening, there is cosmetic bonding and porcelain veneers. Cosmetic bonding uses composite resin materials to rebuild and reshape teeth. Dr. Dougherty uses a chart to choose a shade that exactly matches the color of your existing teeth. Then, the bonding material is applied directly to teeth and hardened. The process is repeated until the desired result is achieved. Porcelain veneers create the smile you want and hide the flaws you have. These dental wonders are made of extremely thin layers of dental porcelain that are adhesively bonded to correct teeth that may be more seriously chipped, cracked or misaligned.

Teeth whitening. Depending on what other procedures your smile makeover includes, teeth whitening may be either the finishing touch or the first step. Porcelain and composite resin are not altered by whitening gels. So, if those are part of the plan, then you’ll want to have your teeth their whitest before applying dental porcelain or composite materials. Then, when your smile makeover is complete, you’ll have a uniformly white and beautiful smile.

Restore your Smile with Dental Implants in Ocean City, MD

480753457There’s bad news and there’s good news. The bad news is the tooth fairy isn’t real. The good news is that if you’re an adult who’s missing one or more teeth, you can replace those teeth with dental implants. Also called tooth implants, dental implants are the most lifelike tooth restoration because they replace both the crown and the root of a tooth. Dr. Edward T. Dougherty, Jr. at Delmarva Sedation Dentistry in Ocean City, MD, is a diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists who will restore your smile and your confidence with dental implants.

Replacing a missing tooth is not only a matter of appearance, although that is certainly important. Another factor to consider is the effect on your overall health when you have missing teeth. Even one missing tooth can compromise your ability to eat a healthy diet. Furthermore, adjacent teeth may shift and cause an uneven bite, and missing teeth make gum disease more likely.

The Dental Implant Procedure

Dr. Dougherty is a Master in Dental Anesthesiology, so he will first make sure you are comfortable and relaxed for your dental implant procedure. Whether you prefer mild sedation with nitrous oxide (laughing gas), moderate sedation with an oral sedative or even if you would rather “sleep” through your treatment with IV sedation, Dr. Dougherty and his staff are trained to accommodate your needs.

The procedure itself begins with minor surgery during which Dr. Dougherty implants a small titanium post in your empty socket. Dental implants can also be used to firmly secure partial or full dentures, in which case we’ll strategically position posts along your arch. Over the course of your three- to six-month healing process, the post and your jawbone will bond. In this way, the post not only provides a firm foundation for your tooth restoration—usually a crown—but also helps avert the problem of bone deterioration. When you’ve completely healed, Dr. Dougherty will attach your permanent crown.

Show the World a Beautiful Smile with Porcelain Veneers from Delmarva Sedation Dentistry

92589293Not everyone can be born with the kind of smile a movie star has. Not even a movie star. If your smile could use a little help, then you should consider the treatment that makes Hollywood smiles white, bright and perfectly straight. Porcelain veneers are a cosmetic treatment that can correct a number of dental imperfections. Dr. Edward T. Dougherty, Jr. has used porcelain veneers to give people in and around Ocean City, MD, beautiful smiles and he can do the same for you!

Porcelain veneers are used to conceal and correct many dental flaw including:

  • Stained and discolored teeth that will not respond to teeth whitening
  • Chipped and slightly cracked teeth
  • Teeth that have irregular gaps between them
  • Misaligned and misshaped teeth

Porcelain Veneers and You

Porcelain veneers are made of micro-thin sheets of dental porcelain that Dr. Dougherty designs to be flattering to your smile, your facial features and even your hair color. Using a shade chart, he chooses a porcelain color that most closely matches the color of your existing teeth. In some instances, he may recommend teeth whitening before the porcelain veneer procedure.

The procedure is usually completed in two appointments. At the first, Dr. Dougherty will prep the teeth by removing a thin layer of the teeth’s enamel, so that your new veneers will lay flush with your other teeth. While your custom designed and handcrafted veneers are produced in a cosmetic dental lab, you’ll wear temporary veneers. Then, when yours are ready, you’ll return to Delmarva sedation dentistry to have your porcelain veneers bonded to your teeth. For a perfect smile, Dr. Dougherty will carefully trim and shape each veneer to its most aesthetically pleasing finish.

Get to the Root of the Problem with a Root Canal from Delmarva Sedation Dentistry

480377293When most people read the words root canal they think, “ouch.” In fact, however, a root canal is meant to eliminate the ouch of an infected tooth, which is usually the cause of toothache pain. Dr. Edward T. Dougherty, Jr. and his team at Delmarva Sedation Dentistry in Ocean City, MD, gently perform root canals with the aid of sedation dentistry so you are completely comfortable during the procedure.

Your tooth is essentially comprised of three layers: the hard protective layer called enamel; a sensitive middle layer known as dentin; and the inner layer that is referred to as dental pulp. The pulp houses nerve and lymph tissues, as well as blood vessels. If this pulp becomes infected—because of extensive tooth decay, a penetrating crack or hard blow to the face—then the tooth begins to die and a root canal becomes necessary to preserve the tooth and avoid extraction. Symptoms of an infected tooth include:

  • Moderate to serve pain
  • Swelling around the infected tooth
  • A tooth that is newly discolored
  • Signs of infection on an x-ray

The Root Canal Procedure

The first step in a root canal at Delmarva Sedation Dentistry is making sure you’re comfortable. If necessary, we offer nitrous oxide, oral sedation or IV sedation to help you relax. Then, Dr. Dougherty anesthetizes the site and accesses the pulp chamber and associated root canals. The canals are carefully cleaned, removing all signs of infection and any accompanying debris. The root and canals are filled with a biocompatible material and then sealed. More often than not, Dr. Dougherty tops the tooth with a crown for protection, strength and long-lasting durability.

Dental Anxiety Can Ruin Your Good Health

78325800Did you know that avoiding dental care can lead to more than just a toothache? If you suffer from dental fear or anxiety, you could be at risk of developing the serious medical conditions linked to inflammation and infections of the teeth and gums. Recent studies have discovered a strong correlation between gum disease and cancer, heart disease, stroke, and other life threatening illnesses. Choosing to not visit the dentist regularly can literally take years off of your life. Don’t take chances with your good health, make an appointment with Dr. Dougherty at Delmarva Sedation Dentistry today. Dr. Dougherty’s sedation techniques can help you get past the dental anxiety that is jeopardizing your overall health. Dr. Dougherty protects the health of patients throughout Delmarva Peninsula, including West Ocean City, Bethany Beach, Selbyville, Rehoboth, Fenwick, Ocean Pines, Salisbury, Berlin and surrounding communities.

Dental Anxiety Can Lead to Serious Health Risks

  • Cancer: Researchers have discovered that men with advanced gum disease are 49% more likely to develop kidney cancer, 54% more likely to develop pancreatic cancer, and 30% more likely to develop blood cancer.
  • Heart Disease and Stroke: Studies have shown that 91% of heart disease patients have periodontitis. The two conditions have several risk factors in common including smoking, unhealthy diet, and excess weight. Many suspect that periodontitis has a direct role in raising the risk for heart disease as well. The theory they advance is that inflammation in the mouth can cause inflammation in the blood vessels of the heart, which allow less blood to travel between the heart and the rest of the body. This can raise blood pressure and help fatty plaque to break off the wall of a blood vessel and travel to the heart or the brain, contributing to heart attack and stroke.
  • Pneumonia: Studies have also shown that bacteria growing in the mouth can be aspirated into the lungs to cause respiratory diseases such as pneumonia.
  • Diabetes: There is an incredibly strong connection between diabetes and periodontitis. People with diabetes have trouble processing sugar because of a lack of insulin, the hormone that converts sugar into energy. Studies have found that inflammation that begins in the mouth is able to weaken your body’s ability to control blood sugar levels. Furthermore, high blood sugar provides ideal conditions for gum infections to take root. Fortunately, learning to manage gum disease can help bring your diabetes under control.
  • Pregnancy Complications: Though many factors can contribute to premature or low birth weight deliveries, studies have found a possible link to gum disease. However, infection and inflammation anywhere in the body can interfere with a fetus’ development in the womb.
