What Are Your Sedation Dentistry Options?
- Oral Conscious Sedation: The dentist can prescribe an anti- anxiety medication to be taken the night before or an hour before your appointment begins. Though you will be awake and responsive, you will be completely relaxed and free of apprehension or fear of the procedure.
- IV Sedation: Delmarva Sedation Dentistry can also offer intravenous sedation as well. IV sedation is much like oral conscious sedation except that the medication is administered intravenously. This allows the sedative to take effect much faster and also gives the dentist more control over the level of sedation. You will be completely relaxed and may even be able to drift off to sleep during the procedure.
- Nitrous Oxide Sedation: If you prefer a method that will not cause post procedure drowsiness, then nitrous oxide sedation may be your preferred sedation method. With this option, you will gently inhale nitrous oxide through a small mask covering your nose during the procedure. The gas will produce a sedated feeling of euphoria throughout your treatment. However, the effects of the gas will subside completely a few minutes after removing the mask.

Typically, when you hear about sedation dentistry, you hear about it in relation to dental anxiety. And while calming dental anxiety is the major reason patients choose sedation dentistry from Delmarva, you may want to consider it for other reasons.
For patients with a sensitive gag reflex, sedation dentistry can make an enormous difference. Even if you remain conscious during your appointment, your anxiety and discomfort will fade away and your appointment will seem to have only lasted for a moment.
Likewise, if sitting for long periods can cause you significant neck or back pain, sedation dentistry can make treatment possible. With IV sedation, you can sleep comfortably through your appointment without ever feeling bothered by discomfort of any kind.
Sedation dentistry can also help patients for whom anesthetics don’t have a numbing effect. In addition to calming any fears about pain you might, you’re smile can finally get the treatment it deserves.

At Delmarva Sedation Dentistry, we see many patients who are looking to regain the dental health and beauty that years of neglect have taken from them. Often, though, the reason for that avoidance of care is a deep-seated fear of dental offices and procedures. If that description rings true in your situation, consider IV sedation with Ocean City’s sedation dentist, Dr. Edward Dougherty.
