As your dentist in Ocean City, Dr. Dougherty’s main goal is to help you keep your natural teeth healthy and in your gum line. But sometimes a tooth just needs to go for your oral and/or overall health. If there comes a time when removal is the best option, you can trust us for comfortable, efficient tooth extractions. Keep reading to learn about when and why you may need to have a tooth removed, and how the procedure is done here at Delmarva Sedation Dentistry.
Why Do Teeth Need to Be Removed?
There are a number of reasons that a tooth extraction may be recommended. The wisdom teeth are the most commonly extracted teeth. These third molars often erupt between the ages of 15 and 24 or so. If they are not removed, they can cause issues like tooth crowding, infection, and serious discomfort. Some lucky people do not have wisdom teeth — but folks who do will usually need to have them taken out.
Other cases requiring extraction include when there are too many teeth in the gum line. We will often recommend removal to make space before beginning orthodontic treatment. If you have really neglected your dental hygiene, you may need to have a severely decayed tooth removed to protect your overall health.
Does It Hurt?
Many people think tooth extractions are uncomfortable or a thing to dread, but with modern options in sedation and anesthesia, there is nothing to fear. Dr. Dougherty offers a gentle approach combined with nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, or IV sedation to help you relax throughout the entire procedure. The sedation method that is right for you depends on how your teeth will be removed, how many are being extracted, and if you are really nervous or fearful of extraction.
Simple vs. Surgical Tooth Extractions
There are two types of extractions: simple and surgical. Dr. Dougherty performs both from the comfort of the Delmarva Sedation Dentistry office.
A simple extraction is possible when the tooth has already erupted from the gum line and can be removed in a single piece. This procedure does not require any cutting or sutures and has a faster recovery time than a surgical extraction. Your dentist will use special forceps to gently work the tooth back and forth until it comes out — voila!
A surgical extraction is what’s necessary for a tooth that is infected, trapped beneath the gums, or has broken off at the gum line. First, we’ll make sure you’re totally relaxed. Once you’re comfortable, your dentist opens the gums, removes any surrounding bone, and brings out the tooth. Wisdom teeth extractions are almost always surgical procedures. It takes a little longer to recover from this type of removal, but we’ll prescribe medicine to help you feel comfortable if you need it.
