There are many people that suffer from dental anxiety or phobia. A lot more than you may realize. Most people are so frightened by visiting a dental office that they will choose not to receive necessary treatment. This means that people are refusing treatment for a cavity, infection or other disease that is causing problems. This is not a good idea at all. Leaving diseases or other infections in your mouth without doing anything about it will allow said diseases or infections to spread. Our Ocean City, MD office wants you to have a wonderful smile, as well as excellent oral health. At Delmarva Sedation Dentistry, we want you to know that there are ways to receive treatment without ever feeling any pain or discomfort. Not only is Dr. Dougherty a licensed IV and Oral Sedation dentist, but he’s also a dental sedation examiner for the Maryland Board of Dental Examiners. He knows how much dental phobia can affect a patient’s psyche, which is why he cares about your particular situation.
Our Oral Sedation Methods
When it comes to the types dental sedation methods that are offered, they can range from mild to complete. We offer both methods in the hopes of helping patients get through a procedure successfully. Dr. Dougherty’s mastery of sedation dentistry will help you.
We offer the following sedation services:
- IV sedation
- Oral sedation
- Nitrous Oxide
IV sedation: This method is mild and allows you to comfortably rest during a procedure. Dr. Dougherty can control the relaxation levels based on how comfortable you are. Side effects include (based on the dosage) extreme relaxation, drowsiness and sleepiness. During IV sedation, patients are usually awake and can answer questions without feeling nervous of uncomfortable.
Oral sedation: This method can be performed only after reviewing a patient’s medical history and current medications being used. If you’re a candidate, Dr. Dougherty will prescribe this anti-anxiety drug to be taken at a specific time before your appointment. They’re safe, easy to take, and can provide maximum comfort. Patients who opt for this treatment have been known to drift off to sleep during procedures.
Nitrous Oxide: Also known as “laughing gas”, this method is appropriate for all ages. A face mask feeds a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen gas into your airway so you can stay relaxed throughout your procedure. It’s the most common sedation method we administer.
Don’t Fear The Dentist
We’re here to help in any way we can, and sedation dentistry can help you receive the treatment you need.
